Fresh-Faced for 2016: Chevrolet SS Gets Updated

It’s no secret that the Chevrolet SS, our favorite LS3-powered full-size sedan of Aussie descent, is destined to disappear in the next few years. To be fair, the SS is the only LS3-powered full-size sedan of Aussie descent available in the U.S., but we couldn’t love it any more even if it were assembled right here on American soil. (Which we expect to happen for the car’s second generation, incidentally.) But while Aussie-manufactured Holdens may not be long for this world, parent company GM hasn’t denied the Chevrolet division the privilege of enjoying a short list of updates to the SS for the 2016 model year.

Primarily cosmetic, the changes include a revised front fascia with vertical air inlets that are designed to direct airflow over the front wheel openings for improved aero efficiency. LED lamps in the lower fascia partially fill the space where the 2015 model had fog lamps, and a pair of functional vents have been punched into the hood. New 19-inch cast-aluminum wheels also arrive for 2016.

You can look under the hood if you wish, but you won’t find any changes to the LS3 V-8, which continues to kick out 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, all funneled through of a six-speed transmission of either the manual or automatic variety. The last bit of good stuff comes in the form of a new dual-mode exhaust that lets the beast roar under heavy throttle and purr when in the company of more polite folk.

Although we like these changes just fine, what we’d really like to see is GM reaching back a few years and dusting off that sweet twin-kidney setup from the Pontiac G8 before the whole SS/Commodore train comes to a screeching halt. There’s still time, GM.
