When Mercedes-AMG replaced its SLS supercar with the more accessible GT, we couldn’t help but wonder how the firm would continue to cater to SLS customers, not to mention owners of the unforgettable McLaren-Mercedes SLR. The GT, after all, costs just about half of what the SLS went for, and prices for preowned examples of the discontinued gullwinged supercar continue to soar.

There are several rumors as to how AMG will fill the void at the very top of its lineup. To be sure, there will be upmarket versions of the GT, possibly including a Black Series model. We’ve even heard whispers that they could do another run of special SLS models, but that’s far-fetched, not least of all because it most certainly displease current SLS owners who would not like to see the exclusivity of their cars diminished.

Autoblog now reports that AMG could do a standalone hypercar, which would be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-12 teamed with a plug-in hybrid system. If such a vehicle came to fruition, it could deliver as much as 1000 horsepower along with respectable fuel economy, meaning it would be cut form the same cloth as the Porsche 918 Spyder, the McLaren P1, and Ferrari’s LaFerrari.

Hybrid or not, we doubt that Mercedes-AMG will sit idly by and let its most affluent customers desert the brand for other pastures. Stay tuned for more news from Affalterbach.
