European VW Golf Cabriolet Gets Updated for 2016

-While the brand-new Euro-spec VW Tiguan and raucous, 261-hp 40th anniversary Golf GTI Clubsport were busy stealing the corporate spotlight at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show, the mildly updated 2016 Volkswagen Golf cabriolet patiently hung out in the shadows, waiting for a shining moment that never materialized. Good things come to those who wait, however, and we’re here to share its topless Euro-centric charms with the world.

Volkswagen leads off the updates with a new front bumper that is said to be “sportier,” but it appears so similar to the previous car that we had to squint to make out the differences. Carrying the rest of the load are some prominent side sills, a few sporty accents on the rear bumper, and a choice of six new wheel designs. There are also six new paints and single new hue for the softtop. Inside, new designs adorn both the cloth and leather seating options, which are enhanced with unspecified “trim elements,” and steering wheels plucked from the most recent VW designs are in circulation.

Engine choices have been upgraded to a choice of four four-cylinder gasoline engines (105-hp 1.2-liter, 125-hp 1.4-liter, 150-hp 1.4-liter, 220-hp 2.0-liter) or two direct-injected turbo-diesel TDI engines (a 110-hp 2.0-liter, 150-hp 2.0-liter), all now operating in compliance with the new Euro 6 emissions standard. Since the car won’t be sold here, VW doesn’t have to worry about the EPA diesel regulations, which no doubt is a huge weight off its mind.
