-Unless you live outside of the U.S., this may be the closest you ever get to seeing the lovely new Audi A4 Avant, which was just revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show. Styling-wise, there are few surprises—all established A4isms apply from the C-pillar forward—but that back end is oh-so-right. There’s just something about Audi wagons that looks So. Damned. Good.

The interior is shared with the tech-laden 2017 A4 sedan, but the rear now has a standard partition net and a motorized cargo cover that tracks up the D-pillars when the liftgate is opened. Optionally, a folding cargo mat helps subdivide the space to secure stuff, while an available rail system comprised of two rods joined by a strap and anchored along tracks in the cargo area allow one to do pretty much the same thing a different way. The tailgate may also be operated via gesture control.

The handsome, if unpopular, wagon variant of the outgoing A4 was discontinued for the U.S. market midway through the current car’s life span, of course, and the chances of Audi bringing this one here seem no better. A new-generation Avant-based Allroad model seems all but inevitable, of course, but that doesn’t count—jacked up on stilts and festooned with crossover-inspired knick knacks, the Allroad tries to hide the low-slung, slinky wagonness that makes this and every Audi wagon so beautiful. We don’t need no apologist wagon, we want the real thing.
