New Mid-Size Chevrolet Crossover Planned Between Equinox and Traverse

2016 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ

From the What-Took-Them-So-Long Department comes news that Chevrolet will soon offer a true mid-size crossover. According to a report in Automotive News, three GM insiders have confirmed Chevy’s plans for the new mid-sizer, which is being described as larger than the Equinox (which will become smaller and lighter in its next generation as it moves over to GM’s Delta platform) and smaller than the current Traverse.

The report states that the yet-unnamed crossover—let’s call it “Gold-tie-lox”—will be built on a short-wheelbase version of the next-generation Chevrolet Traverse platform yet will retain three rows of seating, at least as an option. The new short-wheelbase version of the platform is also said to serve as the basis for the next-generation GMC Acadia and the soon-to-be-introduced Cadillac XT5, which we caught uncovered during a recent photo shoot in New York.

The new mid-sizer would attempt to woo customers away from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Edge, and Nissan Murano, while the Traverse does battle with the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander, and Ford Explorer on the three-row front. We won’t know how well it will stack up to its competitors until its launch, of course, which is reported to be scheduled for the second half of 2017 as a 2018 model.
