FCA has announced a recall of four-cylinder-powered Dodge Journeys and (Euro-twin) Fiat Freemonts due to a potential engine-fire risk due to loosely attached engine covers.

Discovered in Chile—where apparently, drivers actually do take their utelets off-road—excessive shaking can knock the engine cover loose and onto the exhaust. None of the three reported Chilean engine-compartment conflagrations resulted in death, though FCA reports one injury “described as minor.”

A total of 349,731 vehicles are affected globally. FCA notes that approximately 10 percent are still in dealer hands. In the U.S., 144,416 Journeys are subject to the recall, which is limited to vehicles powered by the 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The six-pot engine, apparently, has a more secure engine-cover fastening scheme.

Dodge dealers will upgrade the engine-cover fasteners starting next month. In the interim, FCA suggests owners keep a watch out for noise from the vehicle’s engine compartment, a burning odor, and/or a warning light in the instrument cluster. Meanwhile, Journey owners who sprang for a Halon system are no doubt patting themselves on the back for their foresight.
