McLaren’s P1 Still in Production, Only Slightly Smaller Than You Remember

Amalgam McLaren P1

McLaren would like to remind everyone that, even though its $1.5-million P1 hypercar is out of production, P1 ownership is still within reach, thanks to Amalgam models. If you can deal with your P1 in a somewhat more compact package—at 1:8 scale, it’s not tiny, but it’s also not full-sized, either—and have the kind of disposable income familiar to buyers of the actual P1, there still exists a P1 for you.

In fact, both the P1 and the track-only P1 GTR are available. The standard P1 scale model, assembled by Amalgam Fine Model Cars, has been on sale since 2013 and retails for $6775. In photos absent any scale markers, the model car appears to be the real deal, right down to its carbon-fiber bits, fuzzy interior surfaces, and, well, everything. Buyers can personalize their model to suit their tastes—or to match their real-life ride. The newly released GTR variant is the same, only cooler, because it’s the GTR. Pricing for the 1:8-scale GTR isn’t yet available, but figure on it being as dear—if not more so—than the more pedestrian P1.

In addition to the P1s, Amalgam sells a host of other gorgeous McLaren models, including a 1970 M8D Can-Am race car, James Hunt’s 1976 M23D F1 car, Ayrton Senna’s 1991 MP4/6 F1 car, the 1990s-era F1 and F1 GTR supercars, the 650S, and more. All are suitably expensive, and marvelously detailed. If these are too rich for your budget, McLaren points out that its P1 is also available as a Hot Wheels toy, a Scalextric slot car, and various-sized models from Maisto, TSM, AutoArt, Minichamps, and Tecnomodel. All are referred to by McLaren as perfect “stocking stuffers” for the holidays. We’re assuming the automaker is referring to the smaller toys, since we don’t often come across $6000 stocking stuffers—or stockings big enough to fit 23-inch long, $6000 stocking stuffers.
