Earlier this year, when Volkswagen trotted out its Beetle Denim concept at the New York Auto Show, we lamented that VW hadn’t wholly resurrected the dippier “Jeans” trim from the 1970s. Wolfsburg, undoubtedly in a somber mood these days, ignored our suggestion. On the upside, those of you who worship at the altar of Saint Jordache will soon be able to get your automotive fix at your local Volkswagen store. Yes, the Beetle Denim convertible is going into production.

Positioned as “a value model in the Convertible lineup,” the Denim features VW’s corporate 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder feeding 170 horsepower through a six-speed automatic to 17-inch Heritage wheels. If you were hoping for an R-Line For All Mankind, you’ll have to build it yourself, which would require way more disassembly and reassembly than we’d care to think about. The production run of 2000 will be evenly split between the Stonewashed Blue shown on the concept and Pure White. Both versions get a denim-look dark-blue top.

Inside, the Denim gets Levi’s-esque red tabs on the seat pockets, light-blue cloth seats with white piping, and dark-blue leatherette accents. VW’s new MIB II infotainment system runs on a 5.0-inch resistive touch screen and features an SD slot, USB interface, aux-in, iPhone/iPad compatibility, a reverse camera, and Bluetooth.

Is it time to start scouring eBay for a Buddy Lee doll to stash in the rear seat? Is it time to listen to nothing but David Bowie and New Wave of British Heavy Metal stalwarts Saxon? We’d counter, when is it not time for those things? Bowie, Saxon, and Buddy Lee got a stonewashed Beetle for you, for me. Man, that’s a Sunday in Pacoima with Ferdinand Piëch that you’re just not gonna forget. At least until the ’ludes kick in.
