2016 Chevrolet Cruze and Cruze Limited Pricing: No, They’re Not the Same Car

2016 Chevrolet Cruze RS

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will start at $17,495 when it debuts early next year. But we’ll let you in on a little secret. You can buy a 2016 Cruze right now for $500 less. Huh?

Chevy is still peddling the current-gen Cruze as the Cruze Limited, which will continue through the 2016 model year side-by-side with the all-new second-gen car. Unlike “Classic” versions of the 2008 Malibu and 2014 Impala that Chevy sold primarily to fleets, the old Cruze is still being pitched to retail buyers (just like the 2015 Infiniti Q40, which sold pretty well). Versus the 2015 Cruze, prices for the carryover car are up $150 for all trims except the base L manual and the diesel, which is on hiatus until the 2017 model year. (No, it’s not being canceled in the wake of the VW diesel scandal.)

The outgoing Chevy Cruze (above) will hang around as the Cruze Limited.

For the new-new 2016 Cruze, the trim lines have been simplified. The Eco model is gone, since Chevy claims its new aero tweaks, weight reduction, and improved 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder obviate the need for that separate, costlier model (EPA estimates are not out). The base L is again only offered with a six-speed manual and comes with a standard backup camera and a seven-inch touchscreen radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. White and silver are the only colors, and steelies the only rollers.

The manual LS is $18,995; the six-speed automatic adds another $1000. The automatic LT starts at $21,995 (it’s also available with a manual) and takes over for the previous 1LT and 2LT trims. The top-level Premier (formerly the LTZ) rings in at $23,995. Chevy did not elaborate on any other standard equipment, except that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and onboard 4G LTE Wi-Fi will be optional. A four-door hatchback is also on the way.

Until then, remind yourself the 2016 Cruze Limited is the old one, while the 2016 Cruze L, LS, LT, and Premier are the new ones.
