Elon Musk Tweets (Then Deletes) Hint About “Model Y” Crossover

2016 Tesla Model X
-The Tesla Model X (pictured above) began reaching customers only last week, but CEO Elon Musk already is dropping hints at an as-yet-unknown future offering: In a now-deleted tweet spotted by Tech Insider, the Tesla founder gave away plans for a Model 3–based crossover called the Model Y. And it sounds like it’ll have those crazy “falcon wing” doors.

The tweet, which has been deleted from Musk’s timeline but can still be viewed in cached form, is a response to a fan’s tweet asking if the Model 3 crossover would have falcon wing doors.

This adds a new little tidbit to what we already knew about the Model 3, Tesla’s planned $35,000 electric family sedan. We found out recently that it would spawn a crossover.

Other Musk tweets, also deleted, revealed that a lower-price Model X with “something like” a 70-kWh battery is coming, “but probably around 12 months from now.” This confirms what we heard at the Model X launch event, where the highest-spec Model X P90 and P90D were revealed and lower-range models were promised later. And yes: With the revelation of the Model Y name, this means that Tesla’s eventual lineup will go S, 3, X, Y. Real subtle, Elon.
