Ford Gets Petty, Announces Limited Run of “King Edition” Supercharged 2016 Mustang GTs

petty-mustang-1Of all the racing family dynasties to make their mark over the years, few have been as successful as the Pettys in sustaining their legacy long after their glory days on the track have ended. In addition to being synonymous with a certain shade of blue and the number 43, the Petty name still carries enough clout to keep people lined up in hopes of capturing some of that magic by association. In this instance, “people” means Ford, which is again teaming up with Petty’s Garage for a run of limited-edition 2016 Mustang GTs.

While the previous Petty/Mustang GT was capped at 143 copies (Brian Johnson of AC/DC got the first one off the line), the current effort will see 300 examples: 243 King edition coupes, 43 King Premier edition coupes, and 14 King Premier convertibles. And while the effort to keep things ending in “43” apparently doesn’t extend to open-air motoring, Petty Blue will play a key role in the exterior of all the models.

The Ford/Petty/Mustang GT caste system breaks down like this: The 243 King editions get a Ford Performance supercharger, a custom engine calibration, a MagnaFlow single-outlet performance exhaust, and a cold-air intake, all conspiring to produce 670 horsepower, 235 more than stock. Extreme-duty TrakPak Ford Performance half-shafts, three-way adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, and an upgraded rear axle enhance the dirty bits, and Petty’s Garage/HRE 20-inch wheels (nine inches wide in front, 10 inches in back) with Continental Extreme Performance summer tires complete the rolling stock. The 14 convertible models are basically the same with the addition of a folding convertible top. The 43 King Premier editions get everything above but swap out the wheels for different HRE/Petty’s Garage units and sub in six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes with two-piece rotors.petty-mustang-2

It just wouldn’t be right if all this history and horsepower just went around incognito, so Petty’s Garage adds a custom rear diffuser with an integrated outlet for the aforementioned, Richard Petty–designed center-mounted single exhaust. Interior tweaks include a custom shift knob, sill plates, floor mats, embroidered head restraints, and rear spoiler. The King Premier edition adds a leather-trimmed interior and a custom tricolor stripe package featuring iconic Petty Blue, red, and white stripes. If that’s not enough, a special dash plate bearing the King’s signature accompanies all 300 cars.

Options for all three versions include different bushings to minimize wheel hop, a coil-over racing suspension, and a supercharger upgrade (hint: it’s a smaller drive pulley) that results in a total of 727 horsepower.

Those looking to get their Petty on will need at least $67,495 to cover the base MSRP for the King edition and at least $90,495 for the King Premier. Sold at select Ford dealers, the cars come with a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty.
