According to a report in Automotive News, Nissan will bring its European-market Qashqai crossover to North America, to slot below the Rogue as a smaller compact entry.

The Qashqai was recently redesigned after the debut version’s highly successful six-year run. The British-built crossover is offered in Europe with two diesels and a 113-hp 1.2-liter gasoline-powered four. A 161-hp 1.6-liter gas four-cylinder recently joined the lineup—presumably that would be the engine for our market. The Qashqai has some under-the-skin commonality with the U.S. Rogue but rides on a 2-inch-shorter wheelbase and is 10 inches trimmer in length. As such, it would slip nicely in between the stubby subcompact Juke and the current Rogue, which is among the larger entries in the compact class.

In order to make room for the Qashqai in the lineup, it’s said that Nissan will drop the Rogue Select—the previous-generation model that has been hanging around as a price leader. As for the Rogue itself, it is adding forward emergency braking, a motion-activated power rear liftgate, and Siri Eyes Free telematics for 2016, with additional changes to be announced later. Nissan must expect that the changes will make the compact crossover even more popular, because it will begin importing Rogues from Japan to supplement output of the model from the company’s plants in Tennessee and Korea. So far this year, sales of the Rogue are up by a third.
