The Rolex Motorsports Reunion Races Are a Monterey Must [Mega-Gallery]

The Rolex Motorsports Reunion Races Are a Monterey Must

The historic races at Laguna Seca—officially the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca—is, along with the Pebble Beach concours, a centerpiece of the weeklong vintage-car frenzy that overtakes the Monterey Peninsula in mid-August. Not only are the historic races one of the longest-running events, they’re also the most immersive. Which means that no matter how many other cool car things are added to the calendar, the races remain a must-do.

Attendees are free to roam throughout the venue, which means you can take in the action from the grandstands, perch yourself on the hill overlooking the Corkscrew, or get a full noise blast peering through the chain-link fence. Even better, you’re welcome to wander the paddock. There, you hear the ear-splitting cacophony of the race-car engines as the teams prep for their events, and you breathe in the heady scent of spent racing fuel. Among the historic—and often historically significant—racing cars, you’ll also find some pretty cool support vehicles, as well.

A few facts: 550 vintage racing cars take to the track for two days of racing, plus two days of practice and qualifying. The competition cars this year spanned from 1911 (a National 40) through 1991. In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Shelby GT350 was the honored marque, and one race consisted entirely of Shelby Mustangs—nearly 40 of them. Another had more than 30 Formula 1 cars from the mid-’60s through the mid-’80s. Click through to the gallery to check out some of our best finds from this year’s event.
