Last year, a gaggle of Porschephiles descended on Carmel Valley’s Rancho Cañada Golf Course for the first annual Werks Reunion. Run by the Porsche Club of America, the show’s a handy Saturday morning stop on the way to the Quail from Pebble Beach. So once again, we stopped in to have a look.

This year’s show was light on our beloved 914s—we ran across one with a halfway-okay 916-look conversion and another sporting tough-looking all-black five-lug Fuchs wheels. Both were stacked to the rafters with 3.8-liter sixes.

We found ourselves mostly attracted to the 356s this year, ogling a rare 1959 Carrera GT, an Abarth GTL, and a lovely, lovely Convertible D restored by its owner.

Our favorite 911 of the event was the righteous 911 SCRS, a rallying machine built after the end of the SC’s model run for homologation reasons. Any Porsche in Rothmans livery is generally a fine example of Zuffenhausen-ian craft, but the SCRS, with its high-riding stance and rack of auxiliary lamps, remains a highlight.

Other special and rare machines on hand included 918s, a 917K, a 959, and a 993 Speedster, the last of which brought to mind Fear’s old chestnut, “New York’s Alright if You Like Saxophones.” And that is all we will say about that. In any event, if there’s not enough variety at your local PCA gathering, pop by next year’s Werks Reunion and get your fill of the exotic, esoteric, and simply nicely preserved.
