Already among the burliest performance hatchbacks around, Ford’s Focus ST (itself a higher-octane version of regular-grade Focuses but lesser than the upcoming Focus RS) can now be had with even more power via a variety of Ford Performance upgrade kits. Depending on which kit is specified, owners of 2013–2015 Focus STs can look forward to a 23-hp bump, to 275 ponies. Let’s investigate. And sorry, Volkswagen GTI owners.

Developed by Mountune, the MP275 Performance Upgrade is available either with or without a Mountune handheld ECU programmer, and with its components either in silver or black. The less-expensive kits start at $1359 and come without the computer, but they do come with a performance intake and a high-flow intercooler, as well as all necessary hardware.

For an extra $790 (if you’d like the silver-finished intake and intercooler), Ford tosses in the mTune ECU programmer and quotes the upgrades as giving the ST 275 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. (The lesser kits don’t quote a specific power figure, but certainly they’d be good for more ponies than stock.) It is worth noting that Ford offers two seemingly identical kits, one for the 2013–2014 Focus ST and a separate one for the refreshed and slightly softened 2015 model; look before you buy.

Given how we tested a 252-hp 2015 Focus ST and saw 60 mph in as little as 6.3 seconds, the upgraded version seems almost superfluous, especially when you consider that the 345-hp, all-wheel-drive Focus RS is just around the corner. But if you’re currently an ST owner with an itch to take on Golf Rs in stoplight drag races, $1359–$2149 isn’t a bad shake for a warrantied, factory-offered and tuned power package. We suggest, however, that you also cough up the $999 that Ford Performance charges for its Quaife limited-slip differential to replace the ST’s stock open differential to help put the power down.
