Frogger 2: Jukey’s Revenge (Or: A Second-Generation Nissan Juke Is Confirmed)

2015 Nissan Juke SL

It probably reads like a foregone conclusion, this announcement that Nissan will redesign the Juke for a second generation—nearly 40,000 of them were sold each of the last two years in the U.S.—but the news holds more than word of a new froggy Nissan. The next Juke will be the first vehicle to ride on a new Renault-Nissan shared platform dubbed “CMF-B,” which stands for Common Module Family, uh, B. (The “B” likely refers to the Juke’s B-segment sizing.) We know at least some of these new Jukes will be built in the U.K., although it isn’t yet clear whether next-gen Jukes sold stateside will be sourced from there or Japan. We’ve reached out to Nissan’s U.S. reps, and will update this post once they respond.

According to the U.K. release, the CMF-B connection will give the Juke “an engineering architecture that drives synergies in all major areas, from purchasing to vehicle engineering and powertrains.” Setting aside our skin-crawling hatred of the word “synergy,” we should note that we’re somewhat intrigued by potential powertrain overlap between the Juke and other Renault-Nissan partners, mostly because while the current Juke’s turbocharged 1.6-liter four is peppy and fun, it’s rather fuel-thirsty.

We won’t hazard a guess as to what specific engine the next Juke will have—although it might be one sourced from Mercedes—and Nissan doesn’t offer timing for the new Juke in its announcement. The oddball crossover’s replacement likely is more than a year away, however. Nissan just refreshed the Juke for 2015, so it probably has some life left, especially given its popularity. Let’s just hope Nissan makes the next Juke as funky-fresh weird as the current one, because coming across cars with genuine character is getting harder every day.
