-What could be more American than a Ford Mustang GT? How about a custom one-off Mustang built to commemorate the Apollo moon missions? It’s not powered by a Saturn V rocket, but it does have 627 horsepower.

Admittedly, special-edition Mustangs can run toward the cheesy side, and this one is no different: The insignia that served a purely functional purpose on the Apollo rockets looks a little costume-y when draped across the flanks of the Ford. But there’s a purpose here—and a bit of a Ford tradition.

The one-off Apollo Edition Mustang was built for the 2015 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in, an annual air show held by the Experimental Aircraft Association, an international organization of aviation enthusiasts. Ford has been building custom Mustangs for the show since 2008, with past years’ commemorative pony cars paying tribute to the SR-71 Blackbird, the Tuskegee Airmen, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbird aircraft, and the F-35 Lightning.

And like those previous air-themed Mustangs, this one’s bedecked with aeronautical accents inside and out. The one-off features a custom black-and-white paint scheme, carbon-fiber splitter and rocker treatments, and LED underbody lighting “to symbolize atmospheric re-entry,” something a Mustang is definitely not capable of. Inside, a customized instrument cluster, sill plates, and custom-embroidered seats (with the rear seat deleted) carry on the theme, while under the hood a Ford Performance supercharger and high-performance exhaust add oomph.

The uniquely customized Stang will go up for auction at AirVenture on July 23, with proceeds going to support EAA youth-education programs that help get young people interested in aviation. To date, Ford’s seven previous show Mustangs have generated nearly $3 million for the charity. And while there’s delicious irony built right into this pony car—remember, thanks to an incredibly deft marketing move on Chevy’s part, the Apollo astronauts all drove Corvettes—anything that helps get kids interested in the future of air and space travel is okay by us.
