The new 2017 Volvo S90 has only just been revealed, but already the rumor mill is churning about a possible Polestar version—not only for the new, range-topping sedan but for its upcoming V90 wagon companion as well.

The source of the excitement is Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson. Speaking to Britain’s Autocar at the S90 unveiling, Samuelsson is quoted as saying, “You could have a high-performance variant without leaving the brand,” adding, “You could still have a nice car with smart design and functionality, but what’s wrong with a little performance?” Nothing, by our book. And the S90’s stated competitors—the Audi A6, Lexus GS, BMW 5-series, and Mercedes-Benz E-class—all offer hotted-up versions.

Autocar speculates that the V90 wagon—which will make its debut at the Geneva auto show—also would get the Polestar treatment, so we’ve provided illustrations of both. In either case, the T8 Twin Engine setup, which combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid system, would seem a logical starting point, as it’s the most potent powertrain in the lineup with 400 horsepower. Certainly, a Polestar won’t get more than four cylinders, since that’s the maximum cylinder count for any Volvo going forward.

The only problem with these Polestar prognostications is that they run counter to what Volvo’s U.S. chief, Lex Kerssemakers, had to say at the same event. Although he allowed that a Polestar model “absolutely would be a four-cylinder,” he also said that it was not part of the plans yet for the S90. But the really big boss suggests that those plans could change.
