Mazda’s ultra-sweet MX-5 Cup race car, based on the new fourth-generation Miata, is finally complete. We first saw the zoomy take on the latest Miata at last year’s L.A. auto show, where the car debuted in prototype form; now, however, Mazda has completed its happy little race car and is tossing it into service immediately as a pace car for the Rolex Monterey Reunion historic races.

Of course, when the 2016 racing season comes around, the track-ready Miata (which is built on the same line as regular Miatas in Japan) will go head-to-head with other Miatas in the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup. As best we can tell, not much about the “production” car (we say “production” because the Cup cars aren’t streetable, regular-sale automobile) is different from the concept shown in L.A. More or less, it is a stripped-out, caged Miata ready to do battle against other Miatas.

While we eagerly await the start of that new series, for now, we’ll have to be contented by the Miata’s performance as a pace car for the near-endless string of impressive vintage race machines participating in the Pebble Beach weekend’s historic races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
