Look What Happened to Grandpa: SEMA Edition TRD Toyota Avalon

-The Toyota Avalon is a large, comfortable, smooth-riding sedan that appeals to people seeking those virtues—mostly older people. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But, like so many marketers, Toyota no doubt would like to appeal to younger buyers. So it sent the Avalon off to its TRD garage, and the result is the SEMA Edition TRD Toyota Avalon.

This Avalon is one of a batch of SEMA Edition TRD Toyotas at this year’s SEMA show, none of which are models you might have expected to find on the show floor. All are similarly turned out, at least from a visual standpoint, with Silver Pearl paint, mostly black trim, and minor interior embellishments.

The Avalon is based on the XLE Touring (surprisingly, not the XLE Sport Touring), a mid-level model in the Avalon hierarchy. TRD dropped the car by 1.5 inches all around with a set of lowering springs, and fitted firmer struts front and rear. They tossed out the standard 18-inch wheels in favor of wider, 19-by-9-inch units with a dark bronze finish. A front spoiler, rocker-panel extensions, and a rear diffuser were added, with a quad-tipped cat-back exhaust system for the 3.5-liter V-6 completing the look.

Will what debuted in Vegas stay in Vegas? Possibly not. Toyota says it’s “looking for actual feedback” on the SEMA Edition TRD machines. So, whaddaya say? Does this make you feel 10 years younger?
