There’s camping, and then there’s camping. But, as anyone who’s spent some time in the woods knows, the best campsites are usually the most remote. For situations like that, you need a vehicle that’s tough, capable, and looks the part too, like this 1979 Mercedes-Benz 290GD.
–
Introduced in 1979, the G-Wagen based 290GD was sold almost exclusively as a service vehicle, available to governments for military, police, and medical use. It came standard with four-wheel drive, a 95-hp, five-cylinder diesel engine, and was available in a variety of wheelbase and cab configurations.

According to the seller, this five-speed-manual equipped example has a mere 40,000 miles on the odometer and lived most of its life as a Red Cross ambulance before receiving a camper conversion. It’s currently being sold by G-Wagen importer G-Mercedes.com, which makes sense considering the 290 was never available in the U.S. The price tag is steep at $45K, but there’s no denying the appeal of a super-capable, do-everything off-road vehicle, especially when it’s painted flat green and has a full kitchen in the back.
