The BMW M6 GT3, a More Worthy Race Car than the Z4

Since 2010, BMW has sold a GT3 version of its Z4 roadster for endurance racing. The problem is that the Z4 is a car of diminishing relevance. Sales of roadsters aren’t where they used to be, and the customer base of the Z4 might be somewhat farther removed from the racing scene than owners of the previous Z4 or the Z3, both of which were offered with an M version. So BMW is launching a new GT3 race car, based on the M6.

Meet the M6 GT3, fitted with a tweaked version of the 4.4-liter turbo V-8 that’s offered in series production cars. In the GT3, it’s rated at up to 585 horsepower and mated to a sequential six-speed racing gearbox. BMW says it trounces its predecessor in terms of driveability and efficiency; the cost of operating the powertrain is said to be about 30 percent lower than that of the Z4 GT3.

Whereas the regular M6 is a rather portly gran turismo, the GT3 version comes in “below 2866 pounds,” says BMW. It is fitted with the appropriate FIA safety cell; crash elements both up front and in the rear are made from carbon fiber.

The net price is 379,000 Euro (about $425,000). Look for this monster on the racetrack starting next season.
